I'M IN!!!!

I am totally the luckiest person in the world. Today I received the best birthday present possible (my birthday was actually yesterday, in case anyone is keeping track.) The Freiwalds and the Balvins surprised me with e-tickets to THE PRICE IS RIGHT!!!!!! Do I have the greatest friends in the world or what? I literally almost wet my pants! This totally makes our trip to LA worth every penny and every second of preparation. Now Dustin and I will be flying into LA Monday night and heading straight to the studio to stand in line to make sure we get in to the Tuesday taping. I am so pumped that I don't even care that I will be spending Monday night sleeping on the sidewalk outside in a strange city! I will do my best to get up on stage and make you all proud (and plant a big wet one on Bob Barker!)

WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

E-I-E-I-O

Greta and I went with Linus and his preschool class on a field trip to a farm today. The boys both prayed this morning that the rain would hold off until we got to see all of the animals...and guess what? It didn't start raining until we were all in the barn with the pigs and cows...the last of the animals for us to see!

The kids got to feed some geese, hold baby chicks, hunt for eggs, pet a goat, pet a pig and feed some cows. They had an absolute blast! The only downside was, of course, the smell. Linus was holding his nose for the first few minutes... I thought he was going to actually start gagging!

Party Time!

Miles was lucky enough to celebrate his birthday 3 (count them, 3) times. We have a large extended family so that was split into 2 parties and then he got to invite a few friends from school over on Saturday to celebrate. They played pin the tail on the donkey, the clothespin drop, and had a cottonball race. After the games, presents and cake we all headed outside to play some baseball. Miles really had a great time which was what I wanted most of all. I will say that I'm glad that his "party season" is over now... it was a lot of planning... and I'm one of those people that gets a little stressed about all of the little details. Plus, now I can focus my attention on the fact that Dustin and I leave for California in 6 DAYS!!!!

re-check

Greta had her recheck today with the ENT doctor. The tubes in her ears are still in place and everything looks good! I was surprised that the tubes were still in place... every kid that I've known has had their tubes fall out within 3-6 months. Greta's were put in last September.

Her ENT doctor, Dr. Schnitker, always gives me the giggles. He is totally old school... wears the white lab coat buttoned up, has the cyclops band on his head. He was the doctor that removed my tonsils when I was 18. I remember going to the pre-op appointment with my dad. Dr. Schnitker was telling my dad about what would happen the day of the procedure, etc. After that he calmly went into all of the things that could go wrong, including the slight risk that a few days after I was home the scabs could come loose and I could bleed to death if they didn't get me to the hospital right away. His bedside manner was a little short and to the point! I will say that he is an awesome doctor, other than that. Greta calls him grandpa when we're there and he gets a real kick out of that. This guy has been doing this for a long time and he knows his stuff! He is also the fastest doctor in the history of medicine. At our clinic visits I have never spent more than 15 minutes inside the clinic (and I mean walking in the front door to walking out.) My favorite story about him: One time he started dictating into his recorder when we were out in the hallway leaving. He started his dictation like this: "Greta Brown, VERY cute 2 year old....."

7!

Happy Birthday Miles! I can't believe that you are already 7 years old! It seems like just yesterday your dad and I were bringing you home from the hospital. You are an amazing kid! You are very thoughtful, helpful with your younger brother and sister, funny, smart... the list could go on and on. I hope you have a great birthday today, buddy!

7 years??

7 years ago today (almost to the minute) I was being admitted to the Monticello Hospital to start the induction process with Miles. It was Mother's Day evening... pretty fitting I think. I spent the whole night, contraction after contraction, awaiting the arrival of our firstborn. I can hardly believe that it has been 7 years already!

Where's Waldo?

While we were all enjoying dinner, Greta snuck away from the table. I looked over to see her at the couch putting blankets on all of the sleeping puppies. She said " I making puppies cozy warm mommy!."

Puppies

Dustin's dad came over tonight and brought his dog's puppies for the kids to see. They are so stinkin' cute!

Our kids were really gentle with them... even Greta, who held them one at a time and whispered "It's o.k. puppy" to each one.

Track & Field Day!

Miles had track and field day today at school. He ran the 200 and 400 meter and did the softball throw (they don't let the 1st-3rd graders use the shot put.) He had a great time and Linus, Greta and I had a lot of fun watching him. It was such a beautiful day to be outside!

early Mother's Day presents

I love this time of year. One of my favorite things is getting the homemade presents my kids make at school. Yesterday Linus brought home a Mother's Day present for me from preschool... a plant potted in a paper cup with a special card that he made. I set it in our window... you should have seen how proud Linus was when I put it next to our herbs (the only plants that I've been able to keep alive!)

Today Miles brought home a book that he made me at school titled "All About My Mom." It has a poem, his handprint and a picture of me that he drew. The best part of the book are the sentences about me that he finished. A few examples:

My mom's favorite TV show is... SpongeBob Squarepants

My mom doesn't like to... do stuff for me when I'm sassy

My mom weighs about... 132 pounds (I LOVE this kid!!!)

My mom's wish is to... go on The Price Is Right

If I could give my mom something special it would be... a day off

I'm sure that some people think these gifts are corny but I absolutely love and cherish them. I suppose that just proves that I really am a mom!

Future Mrs. Freiwald?

Apparently Greta is a woman who knows what she wants. I hope this is not foreshadowing of her teenage years! :)

Planting the seed

Yesterday our church started a new series called "Just Walk Across the Room." It's basically about the little things that we can all do; the small gestures, to point people in the direction toward Christ. Evangelism, yes, but not in the Tammy Faye Baker sort of way. We were given a postcard that said "God used you to help point the way" and were asked to send it to someone who helped us on our Christian journey. I immediately knew who I was going to send mine to.

Doug McConnell was the kitchen manager at Perkins when I first started working there many, many years ago. That is how my brothers and I met and got to know him. He eventually quit and began his life as a pastor. He and his family relocated to Wisconsin where he was taken on as pastor. There were many Mondays over the next few years that he made the drive back to Monticello to visit friends and family, the Youngs clan included. My brothers, Nate and Noah, had already committed to Christ but the rest of us were sailing through putting the whole "God thing" on the back burner. When he came to my parents house to visit we would all end up congregating there to shoot the breeze but the topic of Jesus always ended up being the main topic. Doug is a very straightforward guy. Some may call his evangelism too "in your face"... and I suppose for some it may be too blunt. But over the course of a couple years his words made more and more sense (even though I didn't want it to.) He planted a seed in me that was undeniable. Jesus was the way and God's truth is written for us in the Bible.

I mailed my postcard this morning. I hope it reminds Doug of the lives he has touched and that his work in this world is definitely worth while.

new baby!

My cousin Erin gave birth to her 2nd child today... Maya was born at 1:23 weighing 7lbs., 8 oz. This is a picture of her oldest child, Lena, who is 18 months. I can't wait to see Lena interact with the baby; she has been the only baby in her household and in Erin's immediate family. To say that she is a little spoiled is saying it mildly!

Lena is too cute. She has more energy than any toddler her age. She loves to dance for anyone who will watch. I can't believe how much she looks like Erin's twin brother Caleb. Caleb has just turned pro in boxing and has been teaching her some "moves." Hopefully she doesn't use them on Maya!

miss him already

Dustin left early this morning for California for a work conference. He doesn't return until later Wednesday night. Hopefully he has a great time while he's out there (at least he's not sitting at his desk, right?) If you think of it, pray for my sanity as I'm journeying through single parenthood these next few days!

Lite Brite

Linus, Greta and I have been out and about yesterday and today. We picked up my mom this morning and hit a few garage sales. My mom bought the kids an old (I hate to call it "vintage" since it's from my childhood days!) Lite Brite. We brought it home and played with it for almost 2 hours. It was a sweet deal: the Lite Brite, a tub full of pegs, a Batman refill pack and some plain refill pages for $1.00! I forgot how much fun they are. I remember playing with ours for hours! The only downside...... I'm already finding AWOL pegs all over the house!

another one sick

Dustin caught whatever it was that Greta had. He spent the better part of last night and today feeling terrible. Luckily he's seems to be doing better and actually ate something tonight at supper. Praise God that it was now instead of a few days from now... he leaves Saturday morning for Palm Springs for work and it would stink to be sick while in another state.

Crafty

We had a problem last summer with the neighborhood cats using our sandbox as a litter box. For most of the summer my kids weren't allowed to play in it because of all the cat poop. I decided to find a solution so I put on my Martha Stewart cap this past weekend and made my own sandbox cover. I bought some fabric that is similar to mosquito netting and stitched a cover. It is attached with little hooks that are screwed into the sandbox. I've spent the last couple of days sifting petrified poop out of the sand... now we just have to get some new sand and we'll be good to go!

For 24 fans

24 has been added as another of mine &Dustin's favorite shows. Just like Lost, we started watching it by renting through Netflix. We're on season 5 now and I love every minute!

still looking for tickets...

So far we still do not have tickets for the Price is Right. The concierge desk at the hotel where we'll be staying was a dead end. The lady was really nice but apparently they get tickets the same way we do; either by mail or online. Unfortunately, CBS is not doing the online tickets because it's so close to Bob Barkers retirement. We're still looking into other possibilities but I'm starting to lose a little hope... but I'm not giving up just yet!
