For real?

October has just begun which means if you have your TV on you're going to see two types of commercials: political(on adult TV) and toys(on kid TV... Only 3 months until Christmas, you know!) Over the past couple of weeks I've seen some commercials for toys that have made me stop what I'm doing and say "What? Are these for real?"

Barbie now has a pet dog. This dog comes with treats that you can feed him which also double for poop. Once Barbie feeds the dog, it comes out the other end and she uses her 'pooper scooper' to pick them up. Now, I like dogs and everything but I'm pretty sure this is not one of the highlights of owning one.

There are plenty of baby dolls on the market but I think "Baby Alive" takes the cake. She has baby food and bottles that you can feed her and when she's finished she sits up and says "Uh oh, I made a stinky!" Your child then gets to change a diaper full of some nasty concoction that looks like baby poop.

Let me just say that if you have a kid that wants to change poopy diapers, before you go out and spend money on one of these dolls, call me. I've got a daughter that is in diapers and she makes the real thing... your kid can come over and change her anytime!

  1. We have been discussing this in one of my classes and I came across this quote and I really like it so I thought I would share, "The simpler the toy the more complex the play, the more complex the toy the simpler the play." proof for why most children prefer the box, they are not dummies! :)

I still remember the commercial jingle for this doll from when I was a little girl, 30-something years ago...
"Baby Alive, soft and sweet, she can drink and she can eat..."
Don't remember anything about pooping, though. The most our dolls ever did was drink water and "pee" the water out...guess they're just more technologically advanced these days.

  3. Val, that is too funny... I'm pretty sure that is still their jingle now!

  4. All I have to say is "unreal"

  5. Oh I couldn't stop laughing reading this. I was thinking the same thing...come change Dylan...he fights being it makes it so much more fun!!! Oh and the smell is remarkable.

Ok, I was wrong. I googled "Baby Alive" and got to go down memory lane a bit. I guess the old Baby Alive DID actually have a "messy" diaper. I don't think my parents actually bought me this doll. What a deprived child I was.
There's a funny link to show the old Baby alive here. Caution: contains a few "s-" words.
I think they're definitely marketing this one to folks of our generation who grew up with this stuff and now have kids of our own. Same with "Strawberry Shortcake" and "Scooby Doo." Madison Avenue has buried this in our subconscious with their wily marketing ploys.

  7. I saw the doll this morning on Regis and Kelly, it's hilarious. Why would a child want to change a poopy diaper. And I have you all beat, I have 3 kids that have poopy diapers so send your kids here first!
